Needed a space for double digging my back yard. Wasn't sure what to expect from a premium spade and whether it would be worth the extra dough but after months of use it's definitely worth it.
All the hardware stores in my area sell spades and they're between $20 and $40. The big department store spades are notoriously horrible. Don't even both with those. A spade made with plastic bits - really? Even the more expensive are still manufactured in China and while they look like a spade they just don't perform and I've broken two within 2 months.
What I appreciate about the Clarington is it just does the job. When I first got it I thought wow - it's kinda small and no frills. But after a lot of double digging hours it's really apparent that someone designed this and didn't just make something that looks like a spade. Well balanced, requires far less effort to get the same job done, built to last. What's ironic is that it's so difficult to find a decent spade these days.
Garden Tool Co. is great to deal with too so a win/win.

I am tall so I like the longer handle option offered by this tool. It is much easier on the back than 28" models. That feature alone makes this spade attractive to me. It is also the most robustly constructed tool of its kind I have ever used. I expect it will outlast me.

I used the garden spade yesterday, what a pleasure. No flex in the blade, comfortable handle and the tool is sized to fit me.

I purchased this space along with the Clarington Forge digging fork. Both are great tools! See my review of the digging fork for the story of how I ended up picking these tools.

First heard about Clarington Forge tools from my garden teacher, Alan Chadwick. He said they don't make "decent" spades in America. Just picking it up tells you you've got a real tool in your hand. The balance is great and with care will last for more than my life time
