We have heavy, clay-rich soil that is difficult to prepare in the spring and hardens during dry spells in the summer. This tool is marvelously efficient in breaking through and churning up this difficult soil. The relatively narrow spread of the tines means that you can work between plants (just be careful how you aim; it will take down a tomato plant just as easily as it will rip out a clump of goldenrod) once the garden has grown. Like any well-crafted tool, it is a joy to hold and use. I think it is well worth the expense.
